MULCHES

title underline

Mulching can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your soil and plantings. It greatly reduces maintenance, moderates the soil temperature, and conserves water during dry spells. Mulch acts as a weed deterrent and helps prevent soil erosion, as well as greatly improves the fertility of the soil by adding organic matter as it decomposes.

To be most effective, mulch should be applied at 2” to 4” thick. If topping up a bed, it is helpful to loosen up the existing mulch and work it partially into the soil. Be careful not to over mulch; this may lead to a few problems:

  • It may inhibit the exchange of crucial atmospheric gases causing suffocation.
  • Damage due to rodents may become more prominent.
  • Evaporation of excess water may be inhibited creating waterlogged conditions.
